El circuito electronico impreso o PCB (Printed Circuit Board), es uno de los pilares principales de la electronica. Conocer su composición, aprender a diseñarlos y adecuarlos para su fabricación, es fundamental para los Ingenieros en Electrónica, Mecatrónica y tambíen para los makers y hobbistas de hoy en dia. En este tutorial exploraremos algunos de los conceptos mas basicos del mundo de los PCBs y sentaremos las bases para futuros proyectos.
Comenzando
Un PCB es una tarjeta de fibra de vidrio o aluminio, que alberga dos elementos principales: Interconexiones electricas y componentes.

Antecedentes
Los circuitos electricos impresos nacieron a partir de la necesidad de la industria, de producir electrónica de consumo rapidamente, con mayor precisión, y a un menor costo.
Algunas de los metodos antiguos para la creación de circuitos en dispositivos comerciales son los siguientes:
Cableado de punto a punto
Consistía en conectar los elementos del circuito utilizando cables, alambres e inclusive las propias terminales de los componentes. En la foto vemos un amplificador de audio de los años 60s:

Cuando se comenzó el desarrollo de las tarjetas de circuitos impresos de una cara, su diseño y fabricación eran bastante especializados, por lo que se crearon tarjetas de proposito general para satisfacer las necesidades del mercado. Estas tarjetas se componian de una matriz de postes metalicos en los cuales se enrollaban los cables o las terminales de los componentes que formaban parte del circuito.

Circuitos impresos diseñados a mano
El diseño a mano alzada fue el siguiente paso de la industria para producir circuitos en grandes cantidades. Consistía en dibujar las interconexiones de los componentes para posteriormente transferir ese patron a una placa con una capa metalizada. Para lo anterior, se utilizaban metodos de transferencia por calor, o con materiales fotosensible utilizando luz ultravioleta. Algunos de estos metodos aun se utilizan hoy en dia.

Circuitos impresos diseñados por computadora
El diseño de circuitos asistido por computadora (ECAD) fue el responsable del gran boom de la electrónica. Hoy en dia se pueden diseñar facilmente circuitos de 2 capas o mas y fabricarlos con acabado profesional a un costo muy bajo, e inlcusive hacer producciones medianas y grandes (100 a 1000).

Composición
Una PCB es una pila de varias capas de diferentes materiales, cada una con una función especifica.
Sustrato
El nucleo de las PCBs es llamado sustrato, y lleva a cabo las siguientes funciones:
- Soporte estructural
- Aislante electrico entre las capas conductivas
- Disipación de calor
- Adaptación a superficies curvas (Nucleo flexible)
Algunos materiales de los que puede componerse son:
- FR4 : Fibra de vidrio
- Aluminio : Ideal para aplicaciónes de potencia donde se necesita disipar el calor de los componentes rapidamente.
